The Light of the World

Story Significance:

In the same way that God provided a pillar of fire by night, a very visual representation of God’s glory, presence and guidance, Jesus is the light of life that fills our lives with His presence and guidance.

Activity for Today:

  • Hang the Pillar of Fire Ornament: This Pillar represents the pillar of fire that God used to lead the Israelites through the wilderness in the exodus and Jesus who is now the Light of the World that keeps us from walking in the darkness of sin.
  • Sing “Shine Jesus Shine

Bible Overview:

When the Israelites were traveling from Egypt to the Promised Land, God guided them with a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of smoke by day. When the pillar moved, so all of Israel would move along with it. Jesus as the new Moses, led the whole world by His light. In the same way, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”[i]

Now that Jesus has come, He is the light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not put it out. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through Him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. Jesus was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— children not born naturally, but born from above from God.[ii]

This is the message we have heard from Him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.[iii]
